Social Responsibility. Nailed it!

Like a lot of you, I’ve had the privilege of helping many insureds recover from difficult, sometimes terrible situations, but I’ve often been troubled by memories of the many families without insurance, left in the wake of a catastrophe.

Over the years, as Vanguard required more of my time, I would promise myself that someday, when the kids were older, when the finances were better, when life calmed down just a little … someday, I would do more.

Well, there’s no better time than right now.

To be clear, my aspirations are not to change the world. That is a recipe for failure. However, changing someone’s world – that is an achievable goal. With that purpose, I recently found the good people at Techo US doing amazing things in Latin American and the Caribbean. TECHO US organizes volunteers to fund and build houses for families without homes of their own.

Techo gets the approvals, resources and labor needed to build a simple home, in just 48 hours. The family has to put in some of their own money, and they must help do the building. When the weekend is over, they are handed the keys to their new home. While not fancy, these houses are a vast improvement over their prior living conditions. And, as new homeowners, the family has taken the first step toward a better life. It literally changes someone’s world!

Last month, I sponsored and helped build my second home with Techo’s Dominican Republic team; helping a young mother (with 5 little ones) move into her own home, right next door to grandmom. Did we help this beautiful family with a step up? We certainly did, but I cannot express to each of you how much every one of our volunteers received from the experience as well. This work is good for the body, mind and soul.

Vanguard Claims Administration will be building more homes with Techo soon, and I’d also like to plant a seed with each of you – especially those of you in the claims space. We are never hungry, we are rarely cold and we don’t need to worry about where our kids will sleep at night. Yes, we work hard for those rewards, but many families work just as hard as we do, and still carry heavy burdens. You and I can help. Many difficulties are solved when a family owns a permanent home where they are safe, protected and able to build a future together.
